Magistrate James George of the Kanifing Magistrates’ Court, on 4th January 2010, convicted and sentenced one Musa Drammeh to a fine of D2500, in default to serve three months in prison for violating anti-littering law.
According to the charge sheet, on 10th December 2009 at Bakau, the convict discharged wastes from his premises into public gutters.
In his plea of mitigation, the convict begged the court to exercise mercy on him, noting that he committed the said offence because of poverty. He promised not to repeat it again.
In passing the sentence, the presiding magistrate stated that the convict was a first time offender and that his act was irresponsible. He went on to say that "the convict's act could cause diseases to those with whom he shares proximity."
He stressed that ignorance of the law is not an excuse.
