The
minister of Agriculture has expressed sympathy with the women gardeners of
Kinteh Kunda Janneya in Lower Baddibu District over the recent inferno that
ravaged their garden. She promised her ministry’s quest to support them.
Amie
Fabureh while lamenting over the unfortunate incident, maintained that it is an
emergency situation that needs to be addressed.
“Of
course, there is a need for a need assessment, as ministry will sit and discuss
how best we can extend help to these people immediately.”
Agric
minister, however, indicated that it will take some time because the concerned
authorities need to do proper evaluation and procurement studies to have
quality fencing materials.
She
thus applauded the women of Kinteh Kunda Janneya, who she added, strive under
difficult conditions and circumstances to make ends meet. She also observed
that even though a lot of women are into gardening, they still lack proper
boreholes and other farming materials to boost their production.
“I
felt bad when I visited this garden and these women are doing a lot because
looking at the area it is all green.”
Among
other challenges the women face in the area are lack of concrete wells to
boreholes, as they depend on their own local wells to produce vegetables.
Minister
Fabureh disclosed that the Food and Agricultural Organisation (FAO) is
currently constructing another garden for the community that would be well
fenced with adequate water supply. This construction, she said, will go a long
way in mitigating the perennial troubles of fire outage at community gardens
across the country.
She
thus advised women gardeners to immediately clear the perimeter fence of their
gardens immediately after the rains to avoid fire outbreaks.
