The National Director of 4H Gambia has underscored the importance the agency attaches to building the capacity of youth clubs in the Central River and North Bank Regions on tree nursery preparation and management to mitigate the effect of climate change.
The training focused more on tree nursery management, seed propagation, sowing, poly bags filling, planting methods and time.
Alieu Ceesay was speaking recently in Farafenni at the end of a weeklong training and annual general assembly held at cluster levels.
He said the AGM accorded club members the opportunity to review the performance and challenges of the agency to promote youth participation and involvement for sustainable livelihood development.
The 4H boss said the training was as a result of the recent exchange programme with a sister organization in Norway to build community and youths resilience to climate change adaptation and poverty reduction.
The management and protection of natural resources calls for concerted efforts from all, to bring about meaningful development.
Jalamang Darboe, lead trainer from the department of forestry, thanked 4H Gambia in complementing the efforts of the department of forestry in the protection and regeneration of trees.
He noted that tree nursery preparation and managements would contribute to the attainment of averting climate change and enhance soil fertility and productivity.
The forestry officer said the concept of community forestry and joint forest park management aims to empower communities to take full ownership of the forest and avoid over exploitation.
Banna Suso, 4H Gambia Field Supervisor, applauded cluster youths club for their support to environmental protection and management of forest productive resources.
He said effective tree management and establishment would contribute to the global campaign to mitigating the effect of climate change and increase food production and productivity.
The training was held in the cluster areas of Jamali and Karantaba in Niani, Sanjal in Niamina and Upper Badibu and Jokadou respectively.
The participants lauded 4H Gambia for building the capacity on tree nursery preparation, management and methods of planting, while assuring of establishing cluster tree nursery in all the regions.
