President
Yahya Jammeh received yesterday religious leaders at State House of both
Christians and Muslims, and restated the importance of forgiveness, peace,
unity and reconciliation amongst Gambians through the spirit of God.
In
his statement, the president said: “I am asking the religious leaders to preach
peace for all of us to forgive, and the reason why I am calling religious
leaders is because people listen to you more than they listen to politicians.
“All
I want us to do is to forget what had been said about us, what they have done
to us and other people. All I want is reconciliation so that the country
continues.”
Jammeh
further said the peace had been threatened and sabotaged recently by a number
of people on the other side of the political aisle, especially in the aftermath
of the December 1st poll.
He
further said he respects the Christian religion, that Gambia has religious
tolerance and that he doesn’t hate the Christians, emphasizing that he grew up
under a Catholic family.
