22 Man Squad named for Gabon-Friendly

Gambia's senior national team head coach and the Belgian tactician Paul Put has named a 22-man squad that travelled to Gabon for tomorrow's friendly game in Libraville, Pointsport can reveal.

The Gambian delegation headed by Bakary L. Dahaba, administrator of the Gambia's senior national team left Banjul international airport in the early morning of Sunday at around 3 am via Virgin Nigeria airline with almost all the key players present, except the likes of captain Pa Dembo Touray, Sainey Nyassi, Tijan Jaiteh and talismanic forward Momodou Ceesay also known as Zico.

The Scorpions side, that is currently facing a dilemma regarding the payment of match bonuses, left Gambia with a squad blended with both home-based and foreign-based players who are set to take part in tomorrow’s international friendly, as the Scorpions continue their preparatory programmes ahead of September’s African Nations Cup qualifiers away to Namibia, with Burkina Faso to follow in Banjul a month later.

The squad that was camped at the Seaview Hotel includes in-form Mons midfield kingpin Mustapha Jarju who arrived in Banjul to link up with the rest of his Scorpions teammates only A few days after his strike helped Mons regain promotion to the Belgian top tier football league thanks to a brilliant individual display.

Toubabo as he is affectionately called is chosen to wear the captain armband following the absence of current captain Pa Dembo Touray for Tuesday's friendly.

He will be supported by other big name stars in the Scorpions set up that also includes Ousman Jallow, who is currently in the news for parting company with Brondby, following the expiry of his current contract, while Njogu Demba is also looking set to play a part in the friendly, as well as Sanna Nyassi although there is no  place for Sanna's twin brother Sainey.

Coach Paul Put and his men will be setting their sights firmly on recovering from their disappointment and unconvincing performances, following defeats to Guinea Bissau and Equatorial Guinea in their last two friendly matches.
