One day, God said to Abraham, "Take your son, your only son, Isaac, whom you love and go to the region of Moriah. Sacrifice him as a burnt offering on one of the mountains I will tell you about." (Gen. 22:2)
Isaac, whom Abraham cherished, as his first-born son, his only son begotten in his old age was dear to him. God was aware of Abraham's love for his son when He gave him that order to execute. He meant to test Abraham's loyalty with regard to his earthly possessions.
Without asking any questions, "The next day," Abraham set out on that mission. He just obeyed.
Was there something Abraham knew about God that dictated his line of action?
If God were to ask you to give Him your Issaac, your most-treasured possession would you have hesitated or obeyed?
Not until we can give God our all - what we treasure the most - would we qualify for more.
Abraham was neither heartless nor blindly obedient. This act broke his heart but "to obey is better than sacrifice." (1 Samuel 15:22b)
He trusted God's ability to either resurrect his son or give him another.
What will you withhold from God? "Nothing!"
'Take my life and let it be consecrated Lord to thee....." (MHB 400).
