NO ONE GOES TO WAR EMPTY-HANDED ( Part Two )

“All those gathered here will know that it is not by sword or spear that the Lord saves; for the battle is the Lord’s and He will give all of you into our hands.” (1 Samuel 17:47)

David did not come to the scene prepared to fight Goliath. He was on his father’s errand when he overheard Goliath, “an uncircumcised Philistine” defying the armies of the Living God. (v26) David knew something that the whole army of Israel did not know. He was under a covenant with God which would ensure his victory over God’s adversary.

David did not come armed either. He first despised Goliath and like he declared to the king; “Your servant has killed both the lion and the bear; this uncircumcised Philistine will be like one of them because he has defied the armies of the living God.” Besides, David claimed he was not going to face Goliath in his own might. “The Lord who delivered me from the paw of the lion and the paw of the bear will deliver me from the hand of this Philistine.” (vv36-37) God is thrilled when we can boast in His name, and He backs us up. David also received the benediction of King Saul. “Go and the Lord be with you!” (v37b)

By acknowledging God as the author of his strength, David had wrapped himself in the assurance that victory over Goliath was certain. He had rehearsed instances like these in his quiet time with God and this was just playing itself out at the first opportunity offered him.

Let us be like David, standing on God’s promises and His assurances in order to crown our efforts with tangible results.

‘When we walk with the Lord, in the light of His Word, what a glory He sheds on our way. While we do His good will, He abides with us still….’
