Youth make impressive strides in reshaping Gambia's economic landscape

Gambian youth are actively reshaping The Gambia's economic landscape by shifting from traditional retail and import dependency to value-added exports and digital entrepreneurship.

Young entrepreneurs are increasingly processing local agricultural products (like cashews and groundnuts) and engaging in cross-border and regional trade.

Shifting away from raw subsistence farming, youth are transforming local produce into branded, packaged goods for both domestic and international markets.

Utilizing modern science and technology to scale up production and agribusiness, Gambian youth are increasingly engaging in international import-export trade, cross-border commerce, and agribusiness.

Backed by international capacity-building programs and bilateral agreements, young entrepreneurs are exporting agricultural products like peanuts and cashews and engaging in the creative industries.

The Gambia has secured 100% zero-tariff policies for exports to China, expanding opportunities for youth in the agribusiness and manufacturing sectors.

Organisations such as Ministry of Youth and Sports regularly send delegations of young leaders abroad to learn trade strategies, digital innovation, and business management.

Moving beyond raw agricultural sales to packaged goods, horticulture and climate-smart farming, young Gambians are leveraging tech and the creative arts to diversify the local economy.

Several organisations are actively empowering young traders with vocational training, business development, and financial literacy.

They also provide young entrepreneurs with business planning, financial management, networking, and market.

Youth are leveraging local financial tools like APS, QMoney and Wave to manage their funds efficiently and reduce reliance on traditional banks.
