The Gambia National Athletics Team will today, Wednesday, return to the country after successfully participating in the just concluded African Athletics Championship in Mauritius.

The athletics team under the leadership of Gina Bass will arrive at the Banjul International Airport on board Asky Airline at 6pm.

The triumph IS believed to be the most successful outing for The Gambia with Gina Bass winning a gold medal in the Women's 100 meters.

The Gambian track queen won a gold medal after finishing 11.06 seconds during the 100 meters race final last Thursday.

The Police Officer-cum-athlete, Gina, teamed up with her peers in the women’s relay team to win bronze in the 4 x100 meters while the men’s relay team too reached the finals where they finished 8th to be ranked among the eight best African relay teams.

The 27-year-old Bass had to skip the 200 meters, her best event as a tactical move by her coaches not to put too much energy on her with the World Championship and Commonwealth Games at the corner.

Meanwhile, The Gambia Athletics Association and The Gambia Olympic Committee have asked the sports fraternity to turn up in their large numbers today (Wednesday) to welcome the team with their gold and bronze medals from Africa’s most prestigious athletics event.
