Dear Editor,
It is disheartening and scary to learn about the violent youths in Wellingara, as captioned in the Points’ Newspaper “Armed with cutlasses and knives: youth gang launches two-day violent attack in Wellingara”. This can be attributed to several factors, one of which could be serious security lapses. It is obvious that there was no security intelligence to have detected this group of unruly youths. What would have happened if these youths were armed with conventional automatic weapons? They could have disrupted the existing peace. Not long ago, there was a similar incident of unruly youths who were drifting in residential areas, thus disrupting public peace.
In my view, putting politics aside, The Gambia is no longer about beautiful, didactic, and attractive Public Policies and programs, or affluent and eloquent politicians, but a contradictory and borrowed democracy that people should continue to embrace. The Gambia Government should responsibly and promptly step up to ensure its citizens don’t quietly suffer from insecurity and fear- to protect the image of the Smiling Coast of Africa. Religious leaders, Parents, Youth leaders, Community leaders, and teachers should firmly uphold and nurture the required ethics and morality amongst their families, followers and students.
For a long-lasting peace to prevail, there must be justice, and thus those who misappropriate public peace and public funds must be instantly punished by the Law. Both religion and politics should cease to be leap service; they should be practical. Politics and Religion of insults and humiliation should stop immediately to attain sustainability anywhere. For a better Gambia, it must be The Gambia First” for every Gambian, including those in the diaspora.
