The Quintessential Gentleman, The Pillar of Family, The Beacon of Gambian Hospitality
With profound sorrow and total submission to the will of Almighty God, we bow our heads today.
For on the morning of 13th August 2026, our beloved elder brother, Alhaji Sandigie E. Njie, returned to his Creator, in Tujereng, the land that he loved so dearly and served so selflessly.
He was taken from us not by time’s slow hand, but by a cruel hit-and-run as he took a simple stroll near his home.
Yet even in the manner of his leaving, we are reminded of a truth that he lived by: that life is a trust, brief and beautiful, and must be spent in service to others.
Today the Njie-en family has lost a giant.
The Gambia has lost a lighthouse.
And we, his brothers, sisters, friends and countrymen, have lost our dear “Kotoh” — the elder guide, the protector, the living definition of dignity and grace.
- THE GENTLEMAN OF GRACE AND DIGNITY
Alhaji Sandigie Njie was the epitome of “Ndongo Banjul” — that rare Gambian refinement born of good breeding, good faith and a good heart.
He walked with an easy pace. He spoke with a voice that disarmed.
He carried a contagious smile that turned strangers into friends and guests into family.
He was approachable without being small, towering without being proud.
A man of great faith, wisdom, humility and kindness, his presence was itself a blessing.
He did not need to announce his stature.
You felt it in the way he listened.
You saw it in the way he gave — quietly, generously, without ledger or applause.
His was an altruism rooted in the Qur’an that he loved, and in the simple philosophy that he lived:
Find out what people want and give it to them, and even exceed their expectations.
- THE ARCHITECT OF OUR HOSPITALITY
If tourism is the smile of a nation, then Sandigie Njie taught The Gambia how to smile to the world.
From his days as school Head Boy, leadership was his garment.
He rose to become one of our most respected and highly competent tourism experts, a legendary all-rounder in the hospitality industry and the hotel business.
He was a pioneer of “all-year round” tourism.
He had an eye for detail, a mind for service, and a heart for the Gambian worker.
He helped elevate our hospitality industry to heights that earned him the respect of peers, the admiration of an entire sector, and the ITTOG 2021 Award as 1st International Tourist Guide.
He was a nationalist in deed, not just in word.
Much of the success our burgeoning tourism sector enjoys today bears his fingerprints.
For Sandigie never did anything small.
He dreamed big, thought big, and acted big.
He was a visionary, a trailblazer and truly a public officer who performed his duties with integrity and compassion.
- THE MAN OF MANY FIRSTS
Beyond boardrooms and hotels, Sandigie was one of us.
He was an athlete in his youth — a champion in the 100 and 200 meters.
He was a voice of our early sports history, part of the very first team to pioneer live football commentary on 30 November 1969 at Box Bar Stadium, alongside Don Dimond, Seedy Jammeh and Sylas Jones.
He was “Kotoh” elder brother to his younger siblings and friend to all who knew him.
Sharp in intellect, rich in wit, abundant in kindness.
He was the man you could call for advice, for a contact, for a word of counsel — and he would answer.
- THE FINAL TESTAMENT
To lose a brother is to lose a library.
To lose Alhaji Sandigie is to lose a chapter of The Gambia’s best self.
He lived a life worthy of emulation.
He served his family as a pillar.
He served his country as a builder.
He served his fellow man as a servant.
We therefore take solace that he has returned to his Maker.
May Allah SWT forgive all his shortcomings, illuminate his grave, expand his resting place with the light of Jannatul Firdaus, and grant him the highest place among the righteous, the angels and the saints.
- CONCLUSION: SOBERING LIFE LESSONS FROM THE LIGHTHOUSE
Beloved, Sandigie E. Njie has left us, but he has not left us empty.
He has left us a curriculum.

Walk with grace, speak with truth, and treat the least person as royalty. That was Sandigie.

Whether as Head-boy, Hotelier, or Elder Brother, he led by giving.

Then give more than they asked.

He did not wait for The Gambia to be perfect before he gave his best to it.
He built it. Be a builder.

Money fades. Titles expire.
But the warmth of a smile, the memory of generosity, the light of hospitality — these travel with you to the grave and beyond.

He was taken on a morning walk.
Let us then walk more gently, love more deeply, and serve more urgently, for we do not know when our stroll will end.
To the Njie-en family:
may the Almighty grant you “sabr” (patience) and “ajr” (compensation)
To the tourism industry: guard and grow the standards that he set.
To all of us:
let us become lighthouses in our own communities, as he was in ours.

Your race is run. Your commentary is done.
But the echo of your warmth, the blueprint of your service and the light of your example will guide us for generations.
“Inna lillahi wa inna ilayhi raji’un”.
“From Allah we came, and to Him we shall return.”
May your sweet and gentle soul rest in perfect eternal peace, and may your name remain a prayer on the lips of The Gambia.
