Today, we mourn the loss of a stalwart son of The Gambia, Alhaji Muhammadu Cadi Cham, affectionately known as M.C. Cham, who has left an indelible mark on the fabric of our nation.
He died on Friday 28 November 2025 and was buried on Saturday 29 November.
As the last surviving delegate to the historic 1964 Constitutional Talks at Marlborough House in London, M.C. Cham played a pivotal role in shaping the course of our country's history, laying the foundation for the independent and sovereign nation that we all proudly call our home.
With a career spanning multiple decades, M.C. Cham's contributions to The Gambia's development have been multifaceted and far-reaching.
As a Cabinet Minister in the first Republic, he held various portfolios, including Information and Tourism, Education, Youth, Sports and Culture, Finance, and Works and Communication.
His leadership and vision helped shape the nation's policies and programs, earning him the respect and admiration of his peers and his people.
One of his most notable achievements was the introduction of Oustasses (Qur'anic teachers) into the formal school system, a move that helped bridge the gap between traditional and modern education.
His commitment to education and youth development was evident in his passionate advocacy for the empowerment of young Gambians.
Moreover, he was the longest serving President of the Gambia Football Association (1966 - 1977).
As a founding father of The Gambia, M.C. Cham's legacy extends beyond his Ministerial roles.
Undoubtedly, he was a true patriot, who dedicated his life to the service of his country and its people.
His passing therefore marks the end of an era, leaving behind a generation of leaders who will continue to draw inspiration from his example.
- Sobering Life Lessons:
a) The importance of dedication, hard work, and commitment to public service.
b) The value of leaving a lasting legacy that benefits future generations.
c) The power of leadership, vision, and statesmanship in shaping the destiny of a nation.
d) The significance of preserving our history and honouring those who have contributed to our nation's development.
As we then bid farewell to this remarkable statesman, we take comfort in the knowledge that his life and legacy will continue to inspire us to build a better Gambia.
May the Almighty God, Allah, overlook his shortcoming, if any and grant him Al Jannah.
May his memory continue to be a blessing to us all.
