The Coordinator of the Yunus Emre Institute in The Gambia, Mr. Talip Erdogan, has reaffirmed the institute’s commitment to deepening cultural cooperation between The Gambia and Turkey—two nations bound by long-standing friendship and mutual respect.
Mr. Erdogan said the ongoing support aims to promote cultural exchanges that enable both countries to appreciate and learn from each other’s rich traditions, values, and heritage. He noted that the initiative underscores the importance President Recep Tayyip Erdogan attaches to The Gambia within Turkey’s international cultural diplomacy.
Operating in numerous countries around the world, the Yunus Emre Institute serves as a hub for language and cultural learning. Its Gambian branch, established seven months ago, has positioned The Gambia as an important partner in Turkey’s growing engagement with Africa.
“This is why we find it essential to visit The Gambia,” Mr. Erdogan stated, adding that Turkish cuisine remains one of the most impactful aspects of Turkish culture that could benefit The Gambia’s thriving tourism sector.
Highlighting that more than 60 million tourists visit Turkey each year to enjoy its culinary offerings, he revealed plans to introduce Turkish gastronomy to Gambian hotels. “We have selected professional chefs from various establishments, including the President’s personal chef, who will receive hands-on training from a professional Turkish chef. They will then integrate these techniques into their own recipes and share the skills with their teams,” he explained.
According to him, the rise of The Gambia as a notable tourist destination makes this cultural and culinary collaboration timely and beneficial.
Mr. Erdogan further shared that the institute is implementing several projects focusing on arts, education, and youth development. “Our primary goal is to support Gambian artistes and the festivals they organize. We will provide all the necessary assistance they need,” he assured.
He also emphasised the institute’s intention to contribute to the social development of children through creative education and cultural programs.
Expressing his appreciation, Mr. Erdogan commended the staff and management of the Yunus Emre Institute in The Gambia for their dedication and outstanding achievements in promoting cross-cultural understanding and partnership between the two nations.
