Young Gambian author, Muhammed Y. Darboe is set to officially launch his debut novel- titled “The Battle of Beliefs”.
The event slated for Saturday, July 12, 2025, at Baobab Hotel, is believed to be another spectacular gathering of literary minds with special invitations extended to literature lovers, avid readers, and aspiring young writers.

According to the team, attendees can expect an engaging programme that includes a panel discussion with renowned literary figures, a review session, and the opportunity to purchase hard copies of the book.

The ‘Battle of Beliefs’ is a metaphorical satire that dives deep into the political and emotional landscapes of a fictional African nation emerging from the shadows of dictatorship.

Written over several years and inspired by the author’s lived experiences, the book explores how citizens navigate belief, betrayal, and the elusive promise of change.

“This story was born in the tension between silence and speech, fear and freedom,” Darboe explained. “It’s about how people believe in something, lose faith in it, and then struggle to believe again. Those beliefs don’t disappear, they recycle and evolve.”

“The novel is set in the aftermath of a regime change and after uniting to oust an oppressive leader, the nation’s citizens find themselves disappointed by the lack of true progress. The result is a nation divided not by fear, but by clashing ideals where every character is convinced of their own moral authority.”

The novel, he said, also examines the tension between rigid ideologies and the need for open, informed dialogue.

“The book addresses how people cling to beliefs without understanding or experiencing how instant opinions often replace informed perspectives,” said Darboe.

“Characters in the book are shaped by their social and political positions, highlighting the challenges of post-dictatorship leadership, and the struggle for ideological clarity in times of change.”

Despite the disillusionment, he said, the story maintains a thread of hope: that people can still grow, evolve, and reimagine their future.

The author explained that he began writing the novel in 2018, but balancing writing with his responsibilities in The Gambia made the process slow.

It wasn't until he relocated to the United States that he was able to complete the manuscript and bring it to publication. “It is a great delight to have my debut book launched,” he said. “It’s a dream come true. And I’m not stopping here. I’ve already started writing my second book.”

He credited the completion and upcoming launch to the support of a dedicated team who helped with printing, logistics, and promotion all done voluntarily.

“I’m eternally grateful for such encouragement.”

Darboe, however, offered a word of advice to aspiring authors that they must be a reader before becoming a good writer.

“Writing is a process, not a product. Don’t rush learn, read, and grow. It’s never too early or too late to publish a meaningful piece of literature.”

As ‘The Battle of Beliefs’ prepares to enter the world, Darboe expressed optimism that readers will walk away not only entertained, but also challenged to reflect on their own convictions.

“I just want the book to be interpreted positively. That’s the wish of every good author.”
