The items are meant to augment the capacity of the country’s citadel institution of learning, thereby reducing the hardships students and lecturers faced in the past years.
At the handing over ceremony, Professor Pierre Gomez, acting deputy Vice Chancellor, Academic at the University of The Gambia, said due the donation, UTG would for the first time be using UTG resources to develop its Physics, Chemistry and Biology labs.
“The procurement and science lecturers are working on the finalisation of the second phase of materials worth about six million dalasis.” Prof. Gomez stated.
He explained that about D12M would be invested in the Physical and Natural Sciences Labs, citing challenges both students and lecturers faced in the past.
UTG VC indicated that UTG is also investing in the School of Medicines and that plans are in the offing for the construction of building that would house the new programmes, geared towards the development of the sciences in the country.
Professor Ramatoulie Njie, Acting Provost School of Medicine and Allied Health Sciences, said practicing modern medicine and sciences require needful tools such as microscopes and other equipment.
“Through cooperation with the Islamic Development Bank, a multi-purpose science lab was established with support of Turkish Cooperation and Coordination Agency (TİKA)that was tasked with the supply.” she said.
She explained that with the donation, more students would have access to the much-needed equipment not for only the basic sciences, but in the lab medicines, microbiology, hematology and all laboratory medicine modules.
