This year’s event, which attracted officials, students, teachers, parents and distinguished personalities, was held under the theme - “The Heritage Table”.
Basically, the week pays special tribute to centuries of refined culinary tradition, cultural continuity, and the enduring spirit of Turkish hospitality, where every dish reflects a story of heritage, identity and shared culture.
Addressing the colorful reception, Mrb Turker Oba, the Turkish ambassador to the Gambia, expressed appreciation to the Turkish Maarif School and the country representative Mr. Mustafa Dirier with whom they jointly organised the event.
Turkish Cuisine Week, he explained, is an important reflection of their history, understanding of hospitality and family culture, reminding that the interaction was established with different civilisations through centuries.
‘‘As Anatolia has hosted diverse cultures for centuries, Turkish cuisine has gained remarkable richness and variety. Today, thanks to our Chef Mr Onur and the esteem Chefs at Dunes Restaurant, we will have the opportunity to experience a selection of these rich flavours.’’
Ambassador Oba explained that in their culture every dish represents sharing, togetherness and solidarity, noting that in that sense, culinary and dining culture essentially serve as a unique means of building strong bonds among people.
‘‘We are very pleased to see the relations between Turkiye and The Gambia grounded in friendship and brotherhood and continuing to develop in many fields in recent years’’
The Turkish diplomat hinted that cultural interaction constitutes one of the most sincere and enduring dimensions of these relations, noting that the interest shown by their Gambian friends in Turkish culture and cuisine is deeply valuable to them.
‘‘Likewise, interest in African culture and the rich tradition of Africa has been steadily growing in Turkiye as well. Dining tables have a special power to bring people together. A shared meal can sometimes mark the beginning of friendship that last for many years.’’
To this end, Ambassador Oba made reference to a popular saying that ‘a Cup of coffee together remains in the heart for forty years’.
Mehmet Onur Yilmaz and Dennis Elveri, managing director of Dune Lounge, both expressed similar sentiments.
Both expressed delight with the level of participation shown from their compatriots.
