Tostan International the Gambia has been recognised with two prestigious accolades, cementing its reputation as one of the most impactful NGOs operating in rural Gambia.

The organisation proudly received the Human Rights & Accountability Champion Award and the Community Development & Grassroots Impact Award, honours that underscore its transformative work in both the Upper River Region (URR) and Central River Region (CRR).

For years, Tostan has been hailed as a beacon of hope in rural communities, tackling deeply rooted cultural practices while promoting literacy, human rights, and community-led development.

Its interventions have contributed to a dramatic reduction in Female Genital Cutting (FGC), early and forced marriages, and other harmful practices affecting the well-being of girls and women. At the same time, the NGO has championed education, gender equality, and grassroots empowerment, leaving a lasting imprint on Gambian society.

Reacting to the recognition, Edrisa Keita, National Coordinator of Tostan International Gambia, emphasised the significance of the awards. “These awards are a reflection of the tremendous work being done in the Upper River and Central River Regions. They are the result of the commitment of our staff, stakeholders, and the communities we serve, as well as the unwavering support of our development partners,” Keita stated.

He further highlighted that Tostan’s mission remains clear: to continue transforming lives and livelihoods across Gambian communities through its community-led approach. “Our impact will continue as human rights and community development are central to our agenda,” he added.

The NGO’s success story is built on resilience, collaboration, and inclusivity. With strong backing from the Government of The Gambia, particularly the Governors of URR and CRR, local councils, and the Ministry of Gender, Children and Social Welfare, Tostan has been able to deliver meaningful results. Its partnership with over 303 communities has been pivotal in driving collective action and ensuring sustainable change.

Tostan International’s technical guidance and strategic direction have also played a critical role in shaping the NGO’s achievements in The Gambia. The recognition by TANGO leadership and the Board further validates the contributions of civil society organisations to national development.

As the celebrations continue, one message resonates clearly: this victory belongs not only to Tostan but to the communities, leaders, and partners who have walked the journey together. The awards serve as both recognition of past achievements and motivation to deepen efforts in advancing human rights and community development for generations to come.
