The Social Security and Housing Finance Corporation (SSHFC), has once again demonstrated its commitment to social protection by presenting Ramadan food items worth D734,160 to 115 bedridden pensioners across The Gambia.

The donation, comprising 120 bags of rice, 120 bags of potatoes, 120 bags of onions, 120 cartons of sugar (25kg each), and 120 containers of cooking oil (5 litres each), was formally handed over at a ceremony held at SSHFC grounds in Banjul. The event was attended by senior management of SSHFC and representatives of pensioners.

Speaking at the ceremony, Managing Director Malang Saloum emphasised the importance of supporting vulnerable pensioners during the holy month of Ramadan. “Today marks the handing over of food items to our dear pensioners who are bedridden and unable to access such provisions themselves. This year is particularly special, as the beginning of Ramadan coincides with our National Independence Day – a moment of joy for all Gambians,” he said.

Mr Saloum described the initiative as a carefully considered gesture, aligning with the values of Ramadan and SSHFC’s mandate of social protection. “We are deeply concerned about the welfare of our pensioners. Many of them worked tirelessly for this country, and it is fitting that we extend support to those who are now vulnerable and unable to provide for themselves,” he added.

Representing the pensioners, Mr Alieu Faal expressed heartfelt gratitude to SSHFC, noting that this marks the fourth consecutive year the corporation has extended Ramadan assistance to bedridden retirees.

“This donation means a great deal to us. Ramadan is a month of caring and sharing, and these food items will go a long way in helping pensioners at home and in hospital. We truly appreciate the management and board of SSHFC for this laudable initiative,” he said.

Mr Faal further highlighted the nationwide reach of the gesture, praising SSHFC for ensuring that pensioners across all regions benefit. “As patriotic citizens who sacrificed for this country, we feel honoured and supported by this initiative. It is indeed a giant step towards addressing the welfare of pensioners, especially the bedridden, during this holy month,” he concluded.
