Africell has marked a major milestone with the celebration of its 25th year of existence in The Gambia.

Held yesterday at the Coco Ocean Hotel, the landmark occasion brought together government officials, industry leaders, and key stakeholders to commemorate the company’s journey and contributions to The Gambia’s digital and communication sector.

Addressing the distinguished gathering, Africell’s CEO Hussein Diab-Ghanem expressed his gratitude to those who have supported the company’s growth and innovation over the years. He asked his guests to observe a moment of silence in honour of The Gambia and those who could not be present, emphasising the values of unity and reflection that have guided Africell’s journey.

Diab-Ghanem extended his appreciation to several high-ranking officials who have played a crucial role in shaping the country’s telecommunications and digital landscape.

He acknowledged Hon. Momodou Tangara, Minister for Foreign Affairs, for his presence and ongoing support. He also appreciated Hon. Lamin Jabbie, Minister for Communications and Digital Economy.

Recognising Jabbie’s previous leadership at the Gambia Submarine Cable Company, which oversees the nation’s ACE cable connection, Diab-Ghanem commended his expertise in managing one of the country’s most vital internet infrastructures. He expressed confidence in Jabbie’s ability to drive further digital transformation in The Gambia.

Additionally, Hon. Sering Njie, Minister for Defence, was praised for his collaborative approach and support. Diab-Ghanem highlighted Njie’s role in approving and facilitating the deployment of thousands of drones during Africell’s recent celebrations, demonstrating his openness to technological advancement in the country.

The CEO also recognised Dr Njogu Bah, Director General of the Public Utilities Regulatory Authority, who was recently appointed, having wealth of experience in the sector. Diab-Ghanem welcomed his leadership and expressed optimism about the future of telecommunications regulation under his guidance.

Furthermore, he extended his gratitude to Yankuba Darboe, Commissioner General of the Gambia Revenue Authority (GRA), and his deputy, acknowledging their continued support for Africell’s operations and investment in the country.

Concluding his speech, Diab-Ghanem reaffirmed Africell’s commitment to working closely with government institutions, regulators, and stakeholders to drive innovation, enhance digital connectivity, and contribute to The Gambia’s economic growth.

He emphasises that collaboration and forward-thinking policies will be essential in shaping the next phase of Africell’s journey and the country’s broader digital transformation.

The 25th-anniversary celebration not only marked a quarter-century of achievements but also reinforced Africell’s position as a leader in The Gambia’s telecommunications sector, committed to expanding access, fostering innovation, and strengthening partnerships for a digitally inclusive future.
