The training held at Sinchu Balia aims at helping young people of the district to achieve and develop their full physical, intellectual, emotional, social and spiritual potential. It also aimed to empower them to be responsible, active global citizens in diversity and inclusion as well as ensure they contribute to the creation of a better world.
The training also aimed to ensure participants respect and value the diversity of communities but also ensure that the association maximises the potential of all young people and adults by creating greater and better learning opportunities.
Momodou Kuyateh, Project Coordinator for Scouts for Gender Equality highlighted the significance of the workshop in addressing the severe and long-lasting consequences for women and other marginalised genders in The Gambia by promoting sustainable development goals, providing guidance and inviting people around the district to stand together as equal partners to craft a shared vision of a gender equal community and implement locally relevant solutions for all.
He said that: “the project initiative on Gender Equality under the umbrella of Diversity and Inclusion will in the near future meet the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) in ensuring a gender equality district, make communities and human settlements in the district inclusive, safe, resilient and sustainable in ensuring that all girls and boys have early childhood development in gender equality and continue to provide urgent actions to combat all forms of discrimination against all women and girls everywhere in the district as well as eliminate all forms of violence against women and girls in public and private spheres, including trafficking and sexual and other types of exploitation.”
Muhamed Fofana, in his remarks on behalf of the District Scout Commissioner stated that scouting in Kombo North is providing young people opportunities to participate in programmes, events, activities and projects that contribute to their growth.
“It is of great importance that Scouts have all the tools they need to stand together to create a bold and visible force for gender equality. At all levels, we must address these topics within our educational programmes and activities. Women and girls represent half of the world’s population, and therefore, also half of its potential,” he added.
Omar Jarju, International Commissioner of Gambia Scout Association said after one year of introducing a Policy on Diversity and Inclusion as an Association to promote gender equality they have started advocating for inclusion and diversity in the association and creating experiences that help youth better understand the importance of diversity and inclusion in addressing gender inequalities within their communities.
