Prof. Gomez receives All-Africa Students’ Union awards

The Minister for Higher Education, Research, Science and Technology (MoHERST), Professor Pierre Gomez has been awarded the Africa Distinguished Public Service Award by the All-Africa Students’ Union (AASU).

The award, presented in Banjul on February 16th 2026, recognises the Minister’s exemplary leadership and the significant transformation achieved within The Gambia’s higher education sector.

Under his leadership, the Ministry has implemented strategic reforms and key initiatives, including major infrastructure development projects such as the construction of modern, state-of-the-art facilities at the University of The Gambia (UTG).

In a media dispatch from the Ministry, the AASU also commended the Ministry’s progress in curriculum reform, the strengthening of research and innovation frameworks, the expansion of Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET), and the increase in scholarship opportunities for Gambian students.

These achievements, the release added, are aligned with the national development agenda of His Excellency Adama Barrow, which emphasises punctuality, productivity, professionalism, and efficiency in public service delivery.

Thus, MoHERST reaffirms its unwavering commitment to sustaining reforms that enhance access, quality, relevance, and global competitiveness in higher education. The Ministry remains dedicated to fostering innovation, strengthening human capital development, and advancing national progress through a responsive, inclusive, and forward-looking education system.
