At the event, Omar Cham, speaker of the NYP reiterated NYP’s commitment to supporting the rights and bolstering the welfare of persons with disabilities in The Gambia.
He also revealed that before attending the stakeholder forum, the role of NYP was to ensure the effective implementation of the Persons Living With Disability Act that was enacted two years ago.
The said bill, he added, seeks to guarantee political and socio-economic rights, such as access to health care, social support, accessibility, education and employment, of persons living with disabilities.
Similarly, Muhammed Krubally, chairperson of the Gambia Federation of the Disabled, which is the umbrella body of the various regional and national disability organisations in the country, delved into the need to empower and include persons with disabilities in activities.
Krubally, who doubles as a magistrate, urged proactive actions to ensure diversity and accessibility, while also advising dissuasion from discrimination as highlighted in the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities.
