The exercise targets 341,446 children aged 9-59 months old across the country. In addition, children aged 6-59 months were supplemented with vitamin A and de-worming tablets.
After successfully vaccinating children in Central River Region (CRR) South, the team moved to CRR North were children within the age bracket were also vaccinated and given supplements.
Fabakary Bass, national field coordinator, NaNA, underscored the importance of the exercise, saying research has shown that in a population where people have enough vitamin A in their system, child mortality is significantly reduced by 25 to 35 percent.
Mr Bass added that the immunisation would reduce sickness and save children’s lives.
Lamin Sawo, regional principal public health officer assured the public that the immunisation is safe. He therefore urged people, particularly caregivers to ensure their children are vaccinated and supplied supplements.
Makutu Camara, a native of Yonna Musa and caregiver thanked the Ministry of Health and partners to meeting them at their respective communities to vaccinate their children.
Lamin B. Touray, a community Health Nurse at Jarumeh Koto under Janjanbureh health center, said they encountered some challenges during the campaign as some parents were skeptical about having their children vaccinated but noted that they were able to convince them that the vaccine is safe for their children.
