The Ministry of Higher Education, Research, Science and Technology (MoHERST) last Wednesday officially handed over the construction site for student dormitories to the partners - MRC Holland Foundation and Brighter Future.

The move marks a vital step towards enhancing the educational infrastructure at the University of The Gambia Faraba Banta Campus, which has already been opened for lectures, with the students approaching the beginning of the second semester of 2024.

As outlined in the masterplan meticulously crafted by Pace Construction Company, the dormitory complex will encompass three distinct components namely: student housing, staff housing and Vice Chancellor’s housing.

However, the priority will be given to the student housing component, which is being divided into phases catering for both married and single students.

It is anticipated that the student dormitories will be more than just living spaces, as they will accommodate State-of-the-art facilities that include a library, mini-market, Cafeteria, food preparation room, storage area, play area, laundry, a hairdressing room and others, as per the comprehensive plan.

According to press release from the Ministry, the facility would not only provide a conducive environment for students but also address the needs of differently-abled individuals by ensuring easy accessibility.

Minister Gomez expressed gratitude to MRC Holland Foundation and Brighter Future, while reiterating government’s commitment to delivering high-quality student dormitory facilities that meet international standards.

During the proceeding, Prof. Gomez presented the master plan design to accord MRC Holland and Brighter Future an opportunity to scrutinise and provide valuable feedback before the start of construction.

Dr. Henrietta Sonko, national coordinator of MRC Holland Foundation, and Mrs Yama Samateh Lowe, national coordinator at Brighter Future, both spoke on the same lines, assuring timely and successful partnership with MoHERST

The duo also laid strong emphasis on the crucial role of tertiary and higher education in building a sustainable economy and ensuring socio-political and economic progress.

As the construction of the student dormitories begins, this partnership promises a brighter future for the University of The Gambia Faraba Banta Campus, fostering an environment conducive to academic excellence and holistic student development.
