The NGO was set up in 2020 to provide assistance to the most vulnerable in society. Essa is a physically challenged 16-year old from a humble background. His mother, Isatou Jallow sells food to keep the family and her meagre earnings from her small business means she is unable to cater for all the needs of the family including paying the school fess of her children.
Essa attends the Christian Community of Latrikunda Lower Basic School (CCLK) but has had to drop out of school as a result of inability to pay his fees.
But now he can smile again as he will be rejoining his friends at the school where he will be attending sixth grade thanks to a cash donation of D10,500 by the Hagie Gai Drammeh Foundation for the Physically Challenged. The money is meant to pay for his school fees for the current academic year.
The philanthropist gesture came as a result of a partnership between the Hagie Gai Drammeh Foundation for the Physically Challenged and a Dutch couple, Millie and Ronald De Ridder who were here in The Gambia in December 2023 and were impressed with the work of the foundation.
Young Essa now has the opportunity to benefit from continuous sponsorship from the foundation contingent to his academic performance.
In receiving the cash donation on Thursday 25th January 2024, Isatou Jallow thanked the foundation for its benevolence, stating how relieved she was in knowing that her son can now return to school to continue his education. She prayed for the foundation that God will continue to bless it and enable it achieve its mission of serving humanity.
The presentation ceremony held at the foundation’s office along Kairaba Avenue was led by Omar Touray, the foundation’s Youth Representative as well as other executive members.
The Hagie Gai Drammeh Foundation for the Physically Challenged is a young NGO but its good work is steadily already being recognised. This is largely due to its high levels of transparency and accountability and its ardent pursuit of a better society through its assistance to the needy and most vulnerable. The foundation’s good works are endearing it to partners near and far and one can only hope that greater things are yet to unfold.
