The International Open University (IOU) on Monday signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Centre for Islamic Finance, Compliance and Advice (CIFCA) of Tanzania.

The MoU, officials said is meant to establish Academic Cooperation in order to support the eligible students in Tanzania under the IOU 1 Million African Flagship scholarship program (1MAS).

The signing of the MoU which was held at the IOU headquarters at Kanifing and is also geared towards strengthening the cooperation of the two institutions.

Dr. Cherno Omar Barry, the Vice Chancellor of the IOU, spoke at length on the significance of the MOU, saying: “CIFCA has over the years served as exam center for IOU. In fact, that’s among the reasons we decided to extend the cooperation.”

“We want to see how best we can extend support to deserving students in Tanzania through the (1MAS) scholarship project that is already established by the founder of the IOU Dr. Bilal Phillips.”

“The Centre For Islamic Finance, Compliance and Advice (CIFCA) in Tanzania, will not only serve as an exam center, but will be a permanent learning center where students will be constantly visiting in order do their assignments, lectures and at the same time do their exams. CIFCA will also recruit students,” he said.

Salum Shaban Lumpsnde , the Secretary General of the Center for Islamic Finance, Compliance and advice (ClFCA) in Tanzania, said: “The MOU collaboration is very key in trying to move and complement the education system in Tanzania.”

He added: “Currently, with the development that is going on in Tanzania, where almost every other part of the country already is digitalized, it would  easier for everyone to get educated at their own convenience,” he said.
He maintained that one of the main objectives of the MOU is to be able to reach out to the majority, especially the needy ones in Tanzania.
