The minister of Gender and Social Welfare has underscored Gambia government’s stance in supporting Civil Society Organisations and United Nations agencies in promoting the rights of children in the country.

Fatou Kinteh was speaking at the launch of the second phase of the PAPEV project held at Senegambia Beach Hotel.

She reminded that The Gambia has signed and ratified major international instruments relating to child rights such as UN Convention on the Rights of the Child (CRC), and the African Charter on the Rights and Welfare of the Child and many others.

“Protection of children requires the effort and commitment of all of us. We cannot leave it to the state alone, neither can we leave it to the schools or parents. Ensuring that children's rights are promoted and protected requires the collective effort of everyone; policy makers, lawyers, teachers, parents. Child protection is everyone's business.” she said.

She, thus, noted that her Ministry is proud to be associated with the establishment of the second phase of the PAPEV project, which she said, seeks to consolidate the gains registered in phase one of the project, while embracing support for children with disabilities and the strengthening of regional child protection structures.

“We will look at some of the challenges we encountered during phase one of PAPEV and address them with appropriate solutions.”

Minister Kinteh thus thanked partners for their efforts, further assuring of government's uncompromised stance on violence against children.

To that end, she noted that Gambia government is committed to do all in its powers to protecting the well-being of children in The Gambia.
