As part of celebrations marking the Global Week of Climate Change Action, the Global Platform Gambia, a youth organisation in the country has called for greater protection of the country’s environment with a view to mitigating the impact of climate change in the country.

The organisation joined others around the world in commemoration of the Global Week of Climate Change Action with a march past from the West-field Youth Monument to  the premises of the Ministry of Environment, Climate Change, and Natural Resource on Kairaba Avenue.

Officials said, Global Platform Gambia, was formed by Action-Aid International Denmark with the objective of mitigating the impact of climate change in the country and fighting for the eradication of poverty in the country.

At the event, Saikou Darboe, Program Manager of Action Aid LRP 9 in Upper Nuimi, emphasised on the need for greater protection of the country’s environment.

He recalled that a series of capacity building training was organised for volunteers aimed at broadening their understanding on issues relating to climate change among others, hence the reason they joined the campaign for climate justice.

Darboe called on the World Bank and other donors to continue supporting initiatives that are geared towards protecting the environment.

Ndella Faye Colley, Executive Director of Action-Aid International The Gambia, spoke at length on the importance of protecting the environment, while urging young people of the country to take the leading role in the fight against climate change.

She reaffirmed their continued commitment to the fight against climate change in the country.

“This convergence is very crucial for the fact that it underscores our commitment to combat climate change and demand for climate justice.”

“When the effect of climate change strikes, it affects everybody irrespective of the individual religion, tribe among others. Therefore, there is a need for all and sundry to collectively fight the impact of climate change in the country.”

The Action-Aid country director urged the government to revisit their policies and rethink their approach towards climate change.

For his part, Momodou Kanyi, from the Ministry of Environment, Climate Change and Natural Resource, thanked Action Aid and its volunteers for their continued commitment towards climate change in the country, while urging young people of the country to always partake in initiatives that are geared towards protecting our environment.
