
The event also celebrated Ghana's 68th Independence Anniversary under the inspiring theme "Reflect, Review, Reset." This vibrant occasion featured a medal presentation parade at the ECOMIG Camp in Barra, located in the North Bank Region.
During the ceremony, Lt. Col. Abraham Puoriyelle, the officer commanding ECOMIG-GHANCOY, disclosed that prior to their deployment with ECOWAS, the Company underwent intensive pre-deployment training. This comprehensive program was carefully crafted to equip both staff officers and troops with essential skills, preparing them not only physically for the challenges of the mission area but also fortifying their mental resilience for the tasks ahead.
He further emphasised that the training has undeniably proven to be beneficial, as demonstrated by the company’s performance since its integration into their Area of Operation (A0). He highlighted that their personnel in the North Bank Region have played a crucial role in executing various operational and civil-military cooperation activities during this time.
Lt. Col. Abraham commended the Ghanaian Chief of Defense Staff and the Gambian government, particularly the Minister for Defense, for their unwavering guidance and support.
Sering Modou Njie, the Minister for Defence, commended the ECOMIG mission for its relentless efforts to uphold democracy, safeguard lives and property, and create a conducive atmosphere for peace and security to flourish.
The ECOMIG mission, he said, comprising forces from Ghana, Senegal, and Nigeria, has played a crucial role in maintaining security and democracy in the country, highlighting the significant contribution of the Ghanaian troops.
He added: “As we commemorate Ghana's 68th independence, we are reminded of the profound historical connections and common goals that unite our two nations. Our relationship is flourishing, fueled by mutual respect and collaboration across various sectors, including defense, security, trade, and governance.”
Minister Njie reiterated Gambia's dedication to collaborating closely with ECOWAS to maintain peace and stability both within the country and throughout the region.
Her Excellency Miatta Lily French, the ECOWAS Head of Mission in The Gambia, emphasised that the responsibility assigned to the ECOMIG forces is immense and demands a clear mandate.
She asserted that GHANCOY 8 has effectively collaborated with various units of The Gambia over the past ten months.
The contingent, she added has carried out numerous operations throughout their mandate (AOR), actively assisting local authorities in their quest for peace and security in The Gambia, adding: “The unit's primary efforts have largely been focused on operational tasks. However, the transition phase of the Mission has required a crucial shift towards community-oriented initiatives,” she stated.
