The Gambia has achieved a historic breakthrough in international dance sport, following an extraordinary performance at the African Dance Championship held on 14 March 2026 in Dakar, Senegal.

Represented by a team of 15 dancers and two coaches, the country delivered a remarkable showing that elevated its status on both the continental and global stage. The highlight came when The Gambia became the only African nation to upgrade to the prestigious A‑Class in Acrobatic Rock’n’Roll, marking a milestone never before reached in the sport.

In a defining moment, a Gambian dance couple clinched first place in the A‑Class category, becoming the first‑ever African champions in Acrobatic Rock’n’Roll at that level.

Team supervisor Matarr Sankoh expressed immense pride in the dancers, commending their dedication and resilience. He noted that despite facing significant challenges—including limited financial and moral support—the team remained focused and committed to their training. “Their success is a true reflection of the discipline and effort invested,” Sankoh said, adding that the victory has made the entire nation proud.

Founder and Creative Director of Flex Fuzion, Ndeye Fatou Diabang, described the achievement as a historic milestone for both the team and The Gambia, particularly as it marked the country’s first participation in the Continental Cup. She, however, called for greater support from government and stakeholders, revealing that much of the team’s participation was self‑funded. Diabang emphasised that beyond competing, the dancers are promoting The Gambia internationally and reshaping perceptions of dance as a serious and impactful profession.

Beyond this landmark victory, the Gambian team posted impressive results across several categories: Third and fourth positions in the Acrobatic Rock’n’Roll B‑Class; Fourth and fifth places in Acro Swing; Fourth position in Girls Formation; Third place in Acro Swing Solo, and the first‑ever A‑Class Coach Trophy

In total, The Gambia returned home with 11 trophies, underscoring the country’s growing strength, discipline, and competitiveness in dance sport.
