The graduating students underwent months of intense training in various disciplines such as electrical installation, construction, information technology, hospitality and other skill trades.
At the event, Omar Ndow, chairman of FonGam Skill Training Institute, who is also the vice principal of the institute, gave background details of the institute, recalling that the institute was founded in 2008 as a non-profit organisation registered with the Ministry of Justice.
He spoke highly of the institute, which has a strong commitment to education and self-reliance, noting that the institute now attracts students from across West Coast and North Bank Regions.
“Since our inception, we have served as a lifeline for students across the West Coast and North Bank Regions. With the unwavering support of SOS Gambia, we have provided training opportunities to over 2,000 students nationwide,” he said.
Thus, Ndow called on stakeholders in the country’s educational system and local communities to take ownership of the institution.
He described the institute as a community-driven initiative aimed at creating positive social impact through practical skills development.
Also speaking, Lamin Bojang, Centre Manager, described the latest graduation as a moment of celebration and reflection on both their achievements and future opportunities.
The institute, he added, continues to earn the trust of the community through quality training that prepares students to become employable, innovative and self-reliant.
Bojang also highlighted the recent improvement and expansions taking shape at the institute in their quest to expand and modernise their infrastructure especially the workshops by upgrading the kitchen and electrical installation departments.
That, he added, also entails improving computer laboratories with better-equipped construction facilities to provide hands-on experience.
Mary Sussie, representing SOS-Gambia, while describing the ceremony as a significant milestone, equally praised the dedication of the teachers and management.
She informed that their Danish patrons are currently sponsoring over 200 students, further reaffirming the institute’s commitment to the partnership.
She thus called on new graduates to work hard and contribute positively to society.
Hon. Sulayman Jammeh, chairman of the Board of Directors, who is also the National Assembly member for Bundungka Kunda, congratulated the graduating students and encouraged them to serve as ambassadors of the institute by using their skills responsibly and productively.
Kumba Daffeh Kah, guest speaker, who is the president of Treasure Women, shared a personal journey and efforts in overcoming those early challenges to become a successful farmer and entrepreneur.
Similarly, she challenged the new graduates to build confidence and pursue their goals with determination, further advising them to always stay true to themselves, stand firm in their abilities and lead with purpose.
Through her organisation, she now supports over 7,000 women across the country.
