The Francis DeGaulle Njie Foundation (FDNF) has continued to pursue its cause of supporting the growth of education in The Gambia to empower particularly academically gifted children in science and technology.

The foundation, set up in memory of the late Francis DeGaulle Njie, who was reputed to have been exceptionally brilliant and gifted, especially in science and technology, held its annual fundraising seminar and dinner on 12 December this year at the Ebunjang Theatre in Kanifing.

The seminar diligently discussed the Theme:  Digital Gambia, Innovation, Inclusion, and Growth, and a sub-theme: Empowering the Next Generation in a Digital Era.

Personalities from government circles and the private sector discussed thematic issues on the discourse moderated by Dr Jorjoh Ndure-Tambedou, executive director of THET Fund, Ministry of Higher Education Research, Science and Technology, (MoHERST), under the officiating guide of Sola Mahoney, who was master of ceremony at the occasion.

The panelists included distinguished individuals in the persons of Mr Mucktarr M.Y. Darboe, Deputy Permanent Secretary of MoHERST, representing Professor Pierre Gomez, Minister of MoHERST; Mr Amran Gaye, Software Developer & AI Expert at DundaAI; Mr Gibril Jibi Chor, Chairman of T-Care System Ltd; and Mr Mohammed Jagana, Chief Executive Officer of Koringo. They threw light on the subject matter, expressing the significance of integrating digital learning and AI in teaching at all levels of education; leveraging digital innovation for efficient healthcare delivery and management; utilising digital innovation as a catalyst for start-ups, micro, small and medium enterprises (MSMES), and job creation; and using AI, data governance, and infrastructure development for national transformation.

It would be recalled that the FDNF was set up to support education generally with a mission of expanding scholarships in science and technology; advancing digital literacy and innovation initiatives for students; supporting health education and awareness, especially in cancer care; and strengthening empowerment programmes for young girls and aspiring journalists, through the Foundation’s subsidiary organisation - the Isatou Mboge Award for Girls’ Empowerment (IMAGE).

In his opening remarks, the Chairman of FDNF, Dr Momodou Jassseh, said: “In the years since its founding, the FDNF has stayed true to its mandate: to promote academic excellence, especially in science and technology; to empower young people through scholarships, mentorship and skills development; and to support the health sector, particularly through brain and cervical cancer awareness and facility improvement.”

He added: “We have awarded scholarships to deserving students, provided mentoring to young professionals, and supported the Edward Francis Small Teaching Hospital—including the renovation of the Gynae Clinic, now named The Francis DeGaulle Njie Gynaecology Centre in recognition of our support.”

Dr Jasseh acknowledged “with deep appreciation the relentless and undiminishing devotion” of the Foundation’s founder, Mrs Mary Alaba Mboge, who has been able to effectively team up with efficient personalities to push the cause of the foundation over the years.

He reassured all their supporters — corporate and individual — that the proceeds from the fundraising “will be utilized strictly and purposefully for the causes” of the foundation.

In her remarks, Mrs Mary Alaba Mboge thanked all those who supported the event.
