The National Coordinator of Friends of West Africa Group (FOWAG), a charity based in United States of America has spoken about his charity’s intervention in distributing food rations to communities, saying this year alone the charity’s total expenditure spent on Ramadan food support stands at D1.4million

Ousman Ndow made this revelation last Sunday at a mass food distribution exercise held at Kerr Sering and Bijilo. The items were donated by Friends of West Africa, The Gambia (FOWAG) in collaboration with the Diaspora Youths of Kerr Sering and Bijilo.

Thus, the Ramadan gesture, which has now become an annual affair, was part of the charity’s annual food support to local communities in the country.

Commenting on the charity’s intervention areas, Ndow explained that FOWAG is a non-private organisation which started in 2010 as part of efforts to give back to their communities especially the area they hail from.

The objective of this humanitarian support, he said, is to reduce the burden on families particularly the women folks in buying essential foods items at this crucial period amid Ramadan.

The move, he added, was started by late Momodou Jallow, back in 2010 when he first presented 500 loaves of bread to the needy.

Notwithstanding Jallow’s passing, Ndow said the organisation executive decided to continue the initiative and thus the annual Ramadan food aid.

He, therefore, expressed delight that they’ve put smiles on the faces of needy families in various communities.

Ndow paid glowing tribute to CEO of Q-group for the amazing work they are doing in the country in ameliorating hardships on families, saying the Q-group is not only a profit-making business entity, but is also contributing immensely in addressing food insecurity in the country.

He thus called on all particularly businessmen to emulate Q-group and support humanity especially during the difficult times of the Holy Month of Ramadan.

He revealed that in their food distribution they visit different Daras to support, adding that their final food distribution was held at Bijilo Lower Basic School last Sunday.

“For the past 13 years we do converge at this school ground and distribute foods items to the residents of these two communities.”

Also speaking, Matar Loum, chairman of FOWAG, recalled that the charity was formed about 10 years ago and that every year during Ramadan they render support to local communities with Ramadan gifts.

The gesture, he added, is basically to support vulnerable families that find it very difficult to make ends meet during this crucial period.

The items donated included bags of rice, parcels of chickens and also a token of transport fare to the beneficiaries.

Beneficiaries such as Mam Jarjue, Sainey Bitaye, Ya Fatou Samba, Kebba Gaye, Tombong Camara among others, commended the benefactors for the benevolence and prayed that God Almighty continues to bless and sustain the charity.

The food items, they acknowledged, came at a right time as it is highly needed most.
