FLUG, GCCI sign landmark pact

The Federation of Labour Unions of The Gambia (FLUG) and the Gambia Chamber of Commerce and Industry (GCCI) have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) aimed at strengthening cooperation between organised labour and the private sector.

The agreement, signed at GCCI's headquarters in Bijilo, is expected to enhance dialogue, foster mutual understanding and promote collaborative initiatives that benefit workers, businesses and the wider national economy.

The partnership provides a formal framework through which both institutions will engage on issues affecting employers and employees while working towards sustainable economic development and industrial harmony.

Speaking at the signing ceremony, Sarata Conateh, Chief Executive Officer of GCCI, underscored the importance of building stronger partnerships between the business community and labour unions.

She said the agreement would help create an environment of trust and cooperation, leading to improved productivity, stronger labour relations and sustainable economic growth.

"This partnership represents an important step towards fostering industrial harmony and ensuring that businesses and workers work together for the advancement of the country's economy," she said.

For his part, Omar Ceesay, President of FLUG, described the signing of the MoU as a significant milestone in the history of labour relations in The Gambia.

He said the agreement demonstrates a shared commitment to protecting workers' rights while supporting a thriving and competitive private sector.

According to him, the collaboration will enable both institutions to engage constructively on matters affecting the workforce and the business community, thereby promoting balanced and inclusive development.

"This partnership is a win-win for workers and employers alike. While safeguarding the rights and welfare of workers, we must also ensure that businesses have the support they need to grow, create jobs and contribute to national development," Ceesay stated.

Both organisations expressed optimism that the agreement would pave the way for stronger labour-management relations and contribute to inclusive economic growth by balancing the interests of workers and employers in pursuit of national progress.

The MoU is expected to serve as a foundation for future cooperation, policy dialogue and joint initiatives aimed at strengthening The Gambia's labour and business environment.
