The project aims to address the challenges of women in the performing arts sector, particularly the lack of gender equality, capacity building training, comprehensive understanding of fundamental human rights and key obstacles hindering the development of women in the dance industry.
The goal was to empower young girls and women with a profound understanding of their rights, including protection against sexual harassment, sexual offences, rights against exploitation as well as expose them to opportunities.
Ndey Fatou Jabang, founder of Afriq Divas and Flex Fuzion Dance Academy indicated that they were celebrating a decade of overcoming challenges and empowering passionate young women in the dance sector and beyond.
She stated their journey has been one of resilience, fighting societal stereotypes and empowering individuals in the performing arts sector.
She also reaffirmed her commitment to amplifying the voices of women in the performing arts sector and the broader creative space.
“We pledge to continue advocating, promoting, guiding, protecting aspiring artists and empowering them to evolve into successful artistic entrepreneurs,” she further said.
She went on to say that Afriq Divas was established to challenge stereotypes and support women venture into dance. She noted that within a decade, their impact has extended beyond supporting female dancers to empowering women across various creative sectors.
“Despite societal backlash and hurtful remarks, we refused to be silenced. We broke free, reclaimed our voices, stood resolutely for ourselves and all women in the performing sector,” she said.
Sharon L. Cromer, American Ambassador to The Gambia highlighted that it takes creativity, hard work and determination to excel as a dancer, and noted that she has seen these qualities in many talented Gambians.
She also announced that the US Embassy embraces artistes of all genders, including those like Ndey Fatou Jabang and the Afriq Divas, who empower women and girls in the dance sector, contributing to a cultural renaissance in The Gambia.
