The exercise aims to evaluate progress made under the project, which seeks to improve vaccine uptake and strengthen immunisation coverage in underserved communities across the country.
The monitoring team comprises representatives from FIOHTG, the Expanded Programme on Immunisation (EPI), The Association of Non-Governmental Organisations (TANGO), YAFSE, technical experts, project staff and a GAVI strategic advisor. The team is visiting project sites, engaging community leaders and beneficiaries, reviewing records and identifying lessons to enhance future interventions.
Among the key areas being assessed are water reticulation systems, solar-powered installations, boreholes, water tanks, pavements, landscaping, health facility standards and school participation in project activities.
The mission began in Mansakonko with meetings involving officials of the Regional Health Directorate, where stakeholders discussed efforts to improve access to vaccines and increase immunisation coverage in rural communities.
Speaking during the engagement, FIOHTG Country Director, Jainaba T. Sarr, said the project is designed to boost vaccine uptake through close collaboration with health authorities, local leaders and community members.
“Our goal is to support efforts aimed at ensuring that more children and vulnerable populations have access to life-saving vaccines,” she stated.
FIOHTG Board Vice Chairperson, Dr. Saikou Gassama, highlighted the organisation’s complementary role in supporting government initiatives to strengthen immunisation services.
He stressed that strong partnerships and community ownership are essential to achieving sustainable results and improving public health outcomes.
Other project officials, including Resource Mobilisation Manager Yankuba Manneh, Project Manager Dr Abdoukabirr Daffeh and Strategic Advisor Dawda Sowe, reaffirmed their commitment to ensuring the successful implementation of the initiative.
As part of the mission, the delegation also paid courtesy visits to the Governors of the Lower River and Central River regions, where they outlined the project’s objectives and expected impact on communities.
Monitoring activities and stakeholder consultations are expected to continue in Ballanghar, Buduck, Kataba Omar Ndow and Jissadi.
Funded by GAVI, the PIVUTAAL Project forms part of broader national efforts to promote equitable access to immunisation services, strengthen community participation and improve public health outcomes across The Gambia.
