Jarju, a native of Sangajor village and who was area ward councilor from 2013 to 2023 also made a critical comment in relation to the controversial ‘Salibo’ allowances that the country’s largest council was paying to councilors during Tobaski and Koriteh feasts.
Testifying before commissioners of the on-going Local Government Commission of Inquiry which is probing the activities of councils across the country, Jarju stated: “They were giving us the allowances. However, I don’t know the reason as to why they were giving us the allowances.”
However, the commission lead counsel Patrick Gomez, put it to the witness that the payment of allowances was wrong.
In response, the former councilor told the commission that the salibo allowance was an offer given to them.
He admitted to receiving ten thousand dalasis as allowances for Tobaski and five thousand dalasis as allowances for Koriteh. However, he was quick to add that the payment was wrong as ‘they didn’t work for it’.
