In the ongoing battle against drug trafficking and other illicit activities, The Gambia's Drug Law Enforcement Agency (DLEAG) has effectively wrapped up a two-day capacity-building training program for the staff of the Gambia Transport Service Company (GTSC).

This initiative focuses on enhancing their skills in detecting and preventing drug smuggling through the national transport carrier.

The recent training session was conducted under a memorandum of understanding signed on November 4, 2024. This agreement establishes a collaborative framework between the two parties to launch initiatives aimed at preventing and combating illicit drug trafficking and its associated challenges.

Officials stated that the DLEAG management is fully committed to making the country drug-free. They are currently focusing on identifying and disrupting the routes used by drug smugglers. As part of this initiative, training for GTSC staff has become a priority, a move that has been positively received by the GTSC management.

A key objective of the MOU is to safeguard the national transport carrier from being exploited by drug traffickers as a transportation route, thereby preserving the integrity of the GTSC.

At the closing ceremony of the two-day capacity-building program, management of both institutions expressed their heartfelt gratitude for the commitment to implementing every aspect of the Memorandum of Understanding (MOU). They emphasised that this capacity-building initiative was a key agreement and encouraged participants to effectively utilise the knowledge gained, urging them to share the insights learned with others.

Both managements expressed their steadfast commitment, readiness, and determination to enhance collaboration and partnership. They remain dedicated to providing essential training for the staff of GTSC, contributing to global initiatives aimed at combating drug abuse, curtailing illicit drug trafficking, and tackling transnational organised crime.

It is anticipated that after the training, the GTSC staff will now have the knowledge to detect the tactics used by drug traffickers, and recognise the need for the GTSC management to purchase scanners that will identify drugs, as well as to deploy DLEAG operatives to search suspicious luggage in the buses.
