Isatou Sanyang, former chairperson of The Gambia Federation of the Disabled and Women and Children Development Affairs of the Gambia Association of the Deaf and Hard of Hearing (GADHOH) has called on the government, stakeholders and philanthropists to support for the continuation of sign language interpretation slot on Qtv News.

The eleven-month UNDP funded television slot started in July 26 and ended in September 30.

“We the deaf and hard of hearing people want to be informed like any other person, as the eleven month UNDP funded sign language interpretation project on QTV which has come to an end. We have so many deaf people that did have access to education and can’t read newspapers, so they depend on the interpretation to be informed. We therefore, want capable people to come to our aid for our only way to access information.” she said.

She noted that every year the Central government allocates budget for various ministries and departments, while forgetting Persons Living With Disabilities.

“We have been and still fighting for equal right allocation to us but still to no avail. Let government allocate budget for sign language interpreters for us to be included in the society.” she further appealed.

Ndey Ceesay, Board member of GADHOH Female Wing, said they pay tax like any other citizens, which said, is used for other development.

Siaka Jammeh, secretary general of GADHOH, urged all TV stations to employ sign language interpreters especially the national broadcaster.

“We are citizens like any other and we pay our taxes which is used for other development.” he added.
