Farmers in the Central River Region have expressed their dismay and dissatisfaction with the recent official announcement of the groundnut farmgate price, which is pegged at 38,000 per metric ton.

Earlier, the Ministry of Agriculture/National Food Security, Processing and Marketing Corporation (NFSPMC) announced that Government would again purchase groundnuts from farmers at D 38,000 per metric ton for the third consecutive year in which the price remains unchanged.

Reacting to the development, many farmers expressed concern with this recent development, noting that groundnut farm gate price is not only discouraging, but something killing the spirit of farmers in the country.

Alieu Ceesay, a native of Sami Pachonki in Sami District, Central River Region, expressed concern over the official groundnut price in the market.

“Farming is not easy as it requires a lot of time, energy, and resources. For over two years, the price for groundnut is still the same no improvement.”

The move, he added, is not only discouraging many farmers, but also killing the spirit of many especially when it comes to farming.

“If things don't change, the survival of the farmers in this country will be difficult as farmers are not receiving any monthly salary. We surely depend on our harvest to feed our families and solve some our problems.”

Ousman Y. Boye, a native of Jahanka village, also expressed similar sentiment, saying this is discouraging in view of challenges involved in the farming cycle mostly under the hot sun.

He maintained that as agriculture is the backbone of most West African countries, there is need for policy change and for government to empower local farmers.

Elsewhere, Alagie Faal, a  native of  of Medina Dam in Upper Saloum District and Aboulie S. Kandeh,  from Sare Sillereh, both shared similar sentiment.

They acknowledged that going by the farm price, one cannot event sell a bag of groundnut to buy a bag of rice.

Thus, they called on the government to do more by increasing the market price for the groundnut.
