The Gambia’s retail and tourism landscape has taken a significant leap forward with the official opening of City Center, the nation’s newest and largest department store. Situated along the Bertil Harding Highway in Kotu Layout, the ultra-modern shopping complex is poised to redefine retail experience while stimulating economic growth and tourism in the Greater Banjul Area.

The grand inauguration was officiated by Hon. Baboucarr Ousmaila Joof, Minister for Defence, representing the Vice President of the Republic. In his keynote address, Hon. Joof commended the Essaili family for their sustained investment in national development, describing the establishment as a “symbol of confidence” in The Gambia’s business climate and a vital contributor to job creation and economic progress.

Hon. Abdou Jobe, Minister for Tourism and Culture, also addressed attendees, highlighting the strategic importance of City Center’s location. He emphasised that private sector investments such as this play a pivotal role in enhancing the tourism experience and reinforcing The Gambia’s reputation as a dynamic destination for both business and leisure.

Mr. Ali Essaili, General Manager of City Center, opened the ceremony by expressing gratitude to the Barrow administration for the enabling environment conducive to both local and international investment. He reaffirmed the Essaili family’s dedication to upholding high service standards and contributing meaningfully to national development.

Speaking on behalf of the employees of the Essaili Group, Mr. Mustapha Joof thanked the family for their continued fairness, care, and support towards staff. He voiced optimism that these values would remain central to operations at the new facility.

The event drew a diverse gathering of senior government officials, business leaders, and tourism stakeholders, all celebrating what many hailed as a landmark investment in The Gambia’s private sector.

With its world-class infrastructure and customer-focused design, City Center aims to deliver an exceptional shopping experience—reflecting the country’s growing stability, hospitality, and economic promise.
