Modou Sering Joof, Deputy Executive Director at the National Disaster Management Agency (NDMA) said this year’s floods affected over 52,000 people and resulted to 5460 household displacement as well as lost of properties and personal belongings.
According to Mr. Joof, Government released millions to NDMA for their intervention.
He noted that assisting all affected households was not an easy task, considering that lives were lost and infrastructure damaged.
He therefore commended IHHNL and CHRO-Gambia for their benevolence gesture, “saying that the food aid will go a long way in helping families.
Binta Janneh-Jallow, Deputy Mayor of KMC hailed donors for ensuring the most vulnerable in our society benefit from the food aid.
Mrs Janneh-Jallow also described the gesture as timely, and said it will go a long way in helping affected families.
She advised beneficiaries to make best use of the donated food aid.
Musa Jallow, National Director for CHRO-Gambia said KMC was one of the hardest hit areas by the flood, and stagnant water causing water-borne diseases.
According to him, they were deeply concerned with the impact of the floods on people’s lives and livelihoods and as such contacted their partners to explore ways of complimenting government efforts in supporting affected families.
Tolga Bermek, Turkish Ambassador to The Gambia lauded the initiative. He noted that Turkish and The Gambia have long standing relationship in various areas.
He described supporting flood victims in The Gambia as a worthy cause.
