Book on sustainability launched at COP28

Dec 22, 2023, 12:13 PM

Senior officials from African governments, development finance institutions, the United Nations and NGOs, business executives and educationists from Europe, the Middle East and North America, and others converged at a restaurant with an outstanding view, in the world’s tallest building, Burj Khalifa, Dubai, to launch a book on sustainability authored by a Gambian book: Demystifying Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG): Charting the ESG Course in Africa.

There was about double the number of invitees on the official list, even after some had to turn back because they could not find the venue in the massive structure.

The event had been scheduled to take place in a normal COP28 Pavilion, organized by the Arab Coordination group (ACG), including the biggest Arab development finance institutions, in

cooperation with the authors of the publication. The launch was staged on the occasion of the 28th United Nations Climate Conference (COP 28) in Dubai from 30th November to 12th December 2023, which is being attended by more than a 100,000 official attendees and some 160 heads of state.

Mr. Muhammad B.S. Jallow, Vice President of the Gambia, who is in Dubai as head of the Gambian delegation to COP28, graced the launch, accompanied by two Ministers, the Gambian Ambassador to the UAE, Fafa J. Sanyang, and other senior government officials and diplomats.

The event highlighted the global importance of ESG, the ACG (including the $50 billion pledge last month)’s role in development finance in Africa, and a Gambian family’s concerns about and

contributions to critical questions of sustainability.

Palgrave Macmillan, the publisher, offered a 20% discount on this occasion, which is still valid. An address covering the book and two videos were made to the audience by one of the two co-authors.

All the autographed copies of the publication for sale were taken.
