The ambitious project, is part of measures aimed at mitigating the impact of floods, which have become a recurring issue in the city in recent years.
During a site visit, Modou Jonga, CEO of Banjul City Council, underscored the importance of the exercise.
"This activity is crucial as it forms part of their efforts to mitigate the impact of floods."
Jonga reminded that even though they cannot entirely prevent it, but through the partnership, they carry out this vital task.
“At the council level, we are deeply concerned about the welfare and safety of our residents. Together with NDMA and other partners, we are committed to doing everything possible to protect their livelihoods through such initiatives." Jonga stated.
CEO Jonga extended gratitude to their partners, especially the NDMA, and called on residents of Banjul to always support the ongoing efforts in their neighborhoods.
He emphasised the importance of community cooperation, urging residents to facilitate the work of the officials.
"We all need to support them by ensuring they can work without hindrance. If you can join them while they work, it would be greatly appreciated because this effort benefits the entire Banjul community. So, I ask that we all be supportive of this exercise"
Thus, he noted that the clearing operation follows a recent visit by senior government officials and the management of the Banjul City Council to identify disaster-prone areas in the city, further underscoring the commitment to proactive disaster management and community safety.
