Students of Banjulinding Upper and Senior Secondary School Press Club have undertaken a media familiarisation tour across several leading media houses in The Gambia, aimed at deepening their understanding of journalism and inspiring future career choices.

The educational tour, held on Tuesday, 30th June 2026, was organised by the school and accompanied by their teacher, Mr Manneh. The initiative gave students first‑hand exposure to the operations of radio, television and print media, while highlighting the vital role of journalism in society.

First Stop: GRTS

At the Gambia Radio and Television Services (GRTS), the students were welcomed by Mulamin Sanneh, who explained the fundamentals of radio broadcasting. He outlined how programmes are prepared and how journalists communicate information to listeners. Students learned that radio journalism demands strong communication skills, teamwork and commitment.

Star FM Experience

The next stop was Star FM, where Paul Mendy guided the group through different newsrooms and introduced them to newsroom staff. He explained how news is gathered, prepared and presented to the public. Students came away with a clear understanding of the importance of responsibility, accuracy and verification in journalism.

At The Standard newspaper, Tabora Bojang and Lamin Cham explained the process of producing a newspaper, from information gathering and story writing to editing and publishing. They also highlighted challenges such as meeting deadlines, ensuring accuracy and the financial costs of production.

Meanwhile, at The Point newspaper, News Editor Momodou Jawo warmly welcomed the students and guided them through the newsroom. He emphasised accuracy, fairness and fact‑checking, introducing them to reporters, editors and the publishing team. Students observed how teamwork is essential in producing credible and professional news.

King FM Insights

The tour concluded at King FM, where Mamadou Saidou Jallow shared his knowledge of radio journalism and explained how programmes are managed. Students learned more about the role of journalists in informing and entertaining the public.

Lessons Learned

The students described the tour as both educational and memorable. They gained practical insights into how different media houses operate and the processes involved in gathering, verifying, producing and publishing news.

The experience underscored that journalism is not only about reporting events but also about educating, informing and serving society. Students expressed gratitude to their teachers and the media houses for providing such a valuable learning opportunity.
