The WB country representative made these remarks during the inauguration of ECOREAP Infrastructure at Pirang, West Coast Region, recently.
He said these achievements are anchored on teamwork and a resolve to change the narratives.
The inauguration is not the end of a project, he affirmed, saying: “It is another step toward a future where every Gambian household, school, clinic and business has access to reliable, affordable, and clean electricity.”
He explained that the structure has been built step by step, project by project, reform by reform, guided by steady leadership, stability and the shared vision of universal access and a sustainable energy sector.
According to him, in 2021, they inaugurated the OMVG Soma substation. "This key infrastructure strengthened regional integration, improved system stability, and laid the backbone for integrating high voltage transmission in The Gambia’s electricity network," he noted.
He indicated that in 2023, they gathered again to lay the foundation stone for the Jambur Solar Park to integrate clean energy into the generation mix following decades on fossil fuel reliance.
He further stated that in 2024, the Jambur Solar Park was commissioned with 23 megawatts of solar generation and 8 megawatt-hours of battery storage. "That project demonstrated that The Gambia can successfully deliver modern grid-connected renewable energy projects, integrating solar and storage into the national grid.
He also said that in 2025, high-voltage infrastructure under the GERMP program was commissioned, strengthening transmission and Official Use Only distribution networks across the country. “And now, almost exactly one year later, in 2026, we stand together inaugurating access activities that will benefit more than 700 communities across The Gambia," he stated.
"Your Excellency, it does not stop here. Because of diligent project execution by MoPEM, NAWEC, and the entire implementation team, savings from project funds have been reinvested. This has allowed us to mobilize resources to benefit an additional 200 communities under both the GERMP and ECOREAP programs."
He added: "We are also seeing strong private-sector confidence in The Gambia’s energy sector."
He explained that the procurement for the Soma Solar Park has attracted significant interest, demonstrating that investors recognise the progress made in regulation, planning, and infrastructure.
He underscored that the recent reforms in the sector, together with the introduction of substantial tariff compensation measures to reduce production costs and ease the financial burden on families, clearly demonstrate the president’s commitment to consolidating and building upon the progress already achieved in the sector.
