In a recent video released by the United Democratic Party (UDP), Ousainu Darboe reiterated his party’s stance regarding the new constitution of The Gambia, saying they will always go by the 2020 draft constitution.

He made this clarification amid different narratives over his meet with President Adama Barrow at State House over discussions on both the 2020 and 2024 drafts.

“A lot of narratives have been peddled on the social media. I want to make it abundantly clear that the United Democratic Party's position has always been that the 2020 draft constitution, which was the product of broad and deep consultations among Gambians both here and in Diaspora,” he emphasised.

“This must be the draft that should be presented to the National Assembly for their approval or disapproval. We do not accept any other draft other than that.”

Hopefully, he asserted “both President Barrow, and I would agree on something that is beneficial to the Gambian people. And I think what is beneficial to the Gambian people is the project on which they spent D116 million.

“I believe he has the vision and I think he will not allow D116 million to go down the drains in vain. Therefore, my belief is, we'll agree on something beneficial to every Gambian.”

He stated that the 2020 draft may not have addressed everything that the Gambian people want, but it largely does. “We will continue our discussion with the president in hopes of giving the Gambians the constitution they deserve.”

He also highlighted that “those who crafted the 2024 draft constitution, whatever amendments they thought should have been done, should have just been done to the 2020 draft.

“Let them arm themselves with that and make a presentation of those points while the 2020 draft is presented to the National Assembly. I and my party want a good constitution, and my party and I believe that the 2020 draft is the constitution that addresses very closely the aspirations of the Gambian people.”
