The initiative, spearheaded by the foundation’s founder and Chief Executive Officer, Momodou Turo Darboe, has become a hallmark of religious solidarity during the holy months of Ramadan and Lent. For over 25 years, the foundation has provided sugar and other forms of assistance to ease the burden on fasting families and vulnerable households.
Speaking at the ceremony, the foundation’s Director of Public Relations, Saihou Fofana, described the distribution as a continuation of a tradition deeply rooted in compassion and national unity. He explained that the gesture reflects Darboe’s enduring commitment to supporting Gambians regardless of religious, tribal or political affiliations.
Fofana outlined the list of beneficiary communities and institutions selected for this year’s exercise, noting that the initiative is intended to complement government efforts in addressing the needs of the underprivileged during significant religious seasons.
Beneficiaries, in turn, expressed heartfelt appreciation for what they described as decades of consistent and inclusive support.
Fatou Saho, speaking on behalf of the Tallinding community, praised the foundation’s sustained intervention.
“For over twenty-five years, we have been receiving sugar and other forms of support. He knows neither Christian nor Muslim, neither tribe nor ethnicity. Like he always says, ‘One Gambia, One People,’” she remarked.
She further emphasised that Darboe’s philanthropic efforts are not politically motivated, noting that his assistance to vulnerable communities dates back many years and has remained steady across different administrations.
Baba Jabbie, a representative from Fajikunda, echoed similar sentiments, urging beneficiaries to continue praying for Darboe’s wellbeing.
“No one can truly repay someone who provides food for those fasting to break their fast with,” he said, adding that prayers remain the community’s greatest form of gratitude. He concluded by wishing Darboe long life and good health.
The continued sugar outreach underscores the Vision Development Foundation’s role as a key humanitarian actor, particularly during periods marked by reflection, charity and national solidarity.
