CEO Jaiteh presented the gesture to the Gambia Prisons Service through its Deputy Director General Keita Baldeh who described the gesture as timely and impactful to the ongoing prison reforms.
Speaking at the event, CEO Jaiteh who doubles as the Cyprus Honorary Consular, said the gesture was triggered by a purported interview he heard over the radio where a released inmate complained about lack of adequate clothing in the prison among prisoners.
“When I heard this interview, I felt I had a role to play in that, knowing that I have been involved in the second hand clothings trade for the past 30 years.”
“This donation may appear small, but I believe it will go a long way in supporting prisoners who are critically in need of better clothings,” he expressed.
“Supporting the prison is everyone’s business and I think this gesture cannot come at a better time than now. Staff of the prisons service are doing a fantastic job for the public and donations of this magnitude will further encourage and motivate them in diligently executing their functions. Over the years, all the donations and gestures I gave come from my profits to support the public especially at the time of need. I hold the view that sharing my little wealth with the public is where I gained pleasure and comfort. I am encouraging the entire business community to be donating to critical sectors and always bear in mind that whatever you give out in donations belongs to you but, I gained pride from this donation knowing it’s going to support the rehabilitation of hundreds of people to be better and responsible persons in society.” Jaiteh reasoned.
The donated items include: 20K worth of drugs, rags, blankets, HHR, shorts and ladies t-shirts making a total of over 230K.
Keita Baldeh enormously thanked CEO Jaiteh for the donation, describing it as timely and meaningful to the ongoing prison reforms.
Chief Medic at the prison, Chief Superintendent Jabang described SK Jaiteh as a man of wisdom who always supports Gambians without thinking twice especially, during critical moments.
“These drugs will go a long way in helping inmates against diseases and further improve their hygienic conditions. Over the years, SK Jaiteh donated a deep freezer, eye lens and clothings which have been really useful to the inmates. These donations will be distributed among inmates who are in need of clothings. Last year, we used his donated clothes to support inmates, especially foreigners who lack the necessary support from their families, during their time in prison.”
Speaker after speaker, including Commissioner of Operations, Sowe Commissioner Janjanbureh Prison and Store Keeper all hailed the gesture as timely.
