President Adama Barrow has expressed deep sorrow over a tragic maritime accident that occurred off the coast of Jinack Village in the North Bank Region, where a boat reportedly carrying irregular migrants capsized around midnight on 31 December 2025.

In a broadcast statement to the nation, the President confirmed that 102 persons have so far been rescued, with several victims currently receiving urgent medical treatment. He disclosed that seven bodies have been recovered, while search and rescue operations remain ongoing to locate those still unaccounted for.

Describing the incident as heartbreaking, President Barrow said the Government has activated the National Emergency Response Plan and deployed adequate resources to intensify rescue efforts and provide immediate humanitarian assistance to survivors.

“On behalf of the Government and the people of The Gambia, I extend my sincere condolences to the bereaved families and to all those affected by this tragic incident,” the President said, assuring families anxiously awaiting news that the nation stands with them in solidarity.

President Barrow paid glowing tribute to the personnel of The Gambia Navy, commending their swift and courageous response after receiving the distress alert. He noted that the naval officers put their lives at risk in an effort to save others.

He also applauded the professionalism and urgency displayed by emergency response agencies and security services involved in the operation, as well as the tireless efforts of health workers at the Edward Francis Small Teaching Hospital, including doctors, nurses, paramedics, and support staff, who worked around the clock to treat the injured and provide comfort to survivors.

Special recognition was also given to community volunteers and local fishermen, whose selfless intervention significantly supported the rescue operations.

“This incident is a painful reminder of the dangerous and life-threatening nature of irregular migration,” President Barrow warned, stressing that no dream or promise is worth the loss of a single life at sea.

He reaffirmed his government’s commitment to intensifying efforts to prevent irregular migration, while prioritising the creation of safe, dignified opportunities for young people through development programmes, employment, and sustainable livelihoods at home.

The President urged citizens to remain calm, compassionate, and supportive as search and rescue operations continue. He assured the public that verified information regarding the identities and nationalities of the victims will be released as soon as it becomes available.

President Barrow further announced that the Government will launch a comprehensive investigation into the incident, warning that all those found culpable will be dealt with in accordance with the law.

Concluding his address, the President prayed for mercy for the deceased, healing for the injured, strength for grieving families, and protection for all those involved in the rescue efforts.
